Olivia Rodrigo Unveils Third Album Dropping June 12

Olivia Rodrigo just dropped the title of her third studio album, and it might be her most intriguing move yet. 'You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love' arrives June 12 via Geffen Records, following the massive run of 2023's 'Guts' — which scored a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year — and her generation-defining 2021 debut 'Sour.'
"My third album 'You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love' is out June 12th. I am so proud of this record and I can't wait for you to hear it," Rodrigo told The Hollywood Reporter.
The rollout started before anyone even had a release date. Fans spotted cryptic pink teasers popping up around Los Angeles and London in the days leading up to Thursday morning's announcement. The album cover shows Rodrigo swinging upside down in a baby pink dress — a visual that leans into the record's blend of romance and melancholy.
Rodrigo is once again working with Dan Nigro, the producer who's been with her since day one. That partnership has anchored some of the sharpest pop-rock songwriting of the last five years, and it sounds like they're pushing into new territory this time. British Vogue has described the project as Rodrigo at her "most experimental," with at least one track reportedly landing in "smooth, trippy soft rock" territory — a notable departure from the punchy guitars and confessional power ballads that built her career.
“Rodrigo is once again working with Dan Nigro, the producer who's been with her since day one.”
Rodrigo herself has called the album a collection of "sad love songs," but her framing suggests something more nuanced than simple heartbreak anthems. "I realised all my favourite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them," she told NME. That tension between love and unease feels like the emotional engine driving this record.
London also played a role in shaping the sound. Rodrigo has spent significant time in the city and credited it as a source of inspiration for the writing and recording process.
The expectations here are enormous. 'Sour' made her a phenomenon, 'Guts' proved she could do it twice, and now album three is where she has to show she can evolve without losing what made people care in the first place. Early signals suggest she knows that. Whether the experimental turn clicks with her massive fanbase or splits opinion, June 12 is one of the most anticipated release dates of the year. Keep an eye on the singles rollout — if Rodrigo is really switching up the sound, those first tracks will tell us everything.
