Paul McCartney Announces New Album 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane'
Paul McCartney is coming back with his first solo album in more than five years, and this time he's going all the way home. 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane,' his 18th solo studio effort, arrives May 29 — a record rooted in his Liverpool upbringing and the years before the Beatles even existed.
The lead single 'Days We Left Behind' is already out, giving fans their first real taste of what McCartney has described as "a memory song for me," as he told The Hollywood Reporter. The album title itself is pulled directly from a lyric within the music, which tells you something about how close to the bone this one cuts.
McCartney's last album, 'McCartney III,' dropped in 2020 during the thick of the pandemic. He recorded that one entirely alone in lockdown, and critics loved it — it felt spontaneous, loose, and genuinely creative for a guy who could have coasted on legacy alone decades ago. That five-year gap between records is notable, but not exactly surprising for someone who's also been running massive world tours and staying booked in ways most 82-year-olds simply aren't.
“What makes 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane' interesting isn't just that it exists — it's the subject matter.”
What makes 'The Boys of Dungeon Lane' interesting isn't just that it exists — it's the subject matter. McCartney has written about memory and nostalgia before, but an entire album focused on his pre-fame childhood in Liverpool feels like genuinely uncharted territory. We know the Beatles origin story inside and out, but the years before that? The streets, the friendships, the kid who hadn't yet picked up a bass and changed popular music forever? That's a story McCartney has rarely told in this much detail.
At 82, he remains one of the most active and ambitious artists in any genre. Where most legacy acts are content to tour greatest hits until the wheels fall off, McCartney keeps making new work that people actually want to hear. That alone is worth paying attention to.
With the lead single already generating buzz, expect the album rollout to ramp up quickly over the next few weeks. May 29 is the date to circle.
